The sanctuary was lost to the fire — a burning palm frond lodged in the eaves brought the roof down — but Calvary was the first church to return to the Palisades: back on its Highlands campus since September 2025, worshiping Sundays at 10 a.m. in the Calvary Gym while it rebuilds. Calvary Christian School reopened there too, welcoming back 330 students.

The synagogue survived the fire but took heavy smoke damage — hundreds of member families lost their homes. After 16 months of renovation, KI rededicated its sanctuary on May 8, 2026 and is holding services at home again.

St. Matthew's Episcopal Church

The church was damaged and several school buildings were destroyed in the fire. The parish reopened for Sunday services in the church on October 19, 2025, and continues restoring the rest of the grounds — the parish site still lists the wider campus as closed outside scheduled worship. In September 2026 St. Matthew's Parish School welcomed students back to the campus for the first time since the fire, gathering for a first chapel in the Sprague gym (Circling the News, Sept. 9). The Rev. Canon Melissa McCarthy is the priest-in-charge.

The gift shop and wider retreat remain closed while remediation continues.

Groundbreaking for the new recreation center and park took place September 15, 2026, according to Circling the News. The project brings together the City, Rick Caruso's Steadfast LA and JJ Redick's LA Strong Sports. LA Strong Sports says it hopes to have children back on the fields in 2027; that is a goal, not a confirmed opening date for the whole center. Check with Recreation and Parks for current court, field and program access during construction.

The 1928 Spanish Colonial villa — Lion Feuchtwanger's home in exile, now a German-American artists' residence — survived the fire and reopened to the public after months of remediation, welcoming neighbors back with an open house on August 30.
